The adaptive ER stress response is accompanied by a suppression of DNA replication and cell-cycle progression that, to some extent, resembling the response to replication stress. As a result, cells promote the expression of polymerase η and nuclear translocation of p53, which may possibly increase the efficiency of translesion synthesis and DNA repair, leading to enhanced chemoresistance.
