Scheme of bioplastics classification: (1) Drop-in bioplastics (i.e., bio-based or partly bio-based but non-biodegradable plastics), (2) bio-based non drop-in bioplastics, and (3) fossil based non drop-in bioplastics. According to their origin, non-drop-ins (i.e., biodegradable plastics) are divided into (i) vegetal or animal derived polysaccharides and proteins, (ii) polymers from microorganism, (iii) polymers from biotechnology, and (iv) blends of biopolymers and commercial polyesters [25].
