A potential mechanism of bS21 autoregulation. Incorporation of bS21 is one of the last steps in 30S biogenesis. Ribosomes lacking bS21 (immature) contain a liberated ASD, allowing for high-level translation of the rpsU mRNA. Product bS21 binds to generate the replete (mature) ribosome, in which the ASD is occluded. Replete ribosomes will also translate rpsU mRNA but at a reduced rate.
