a) Pro-inflammatory cytokines in plasma were measured by ELISA (IL- 1β, TNF-α, IL-6 and IFNβ). Expression of cytokines in the hypothalamus (b) and hippocampus (c) was determined using quantitative PCR. All data were compared using two-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-hoc tests. Poly I:C had a significant main effect on all cytokines in all areas. Significant interactions of treatment with age are indicated by *p<0.05, **p<0.01, ***p<0.001 and significant post-hoc differences between poly I:C in young and aged by # p<0.05 (n=6 for all groups except young+saline; n=5). All data are represented by mean+/− SEM.
