(A and B) Images of Kit+ (ICC-SM) in isolated submucosal layer of wild-type animals at ×20 and×40 magnifications (n = 6). Scale bars are 100 μm and 40 μm respectively. (C) Absence of ICC-SM on the submucosal surface of the tunica muscularis of the proximal colon after removing the submucosa. ICC-SM networks are intact in preparations of submucosal tissues removed from the muscle. (D and E) ICC-SM were present in Kit+/copGFP mice at ×20 and×60 magnifications (n = 6). Scale bars are 100 μm and 40 μm respectively. (F) Absence of Kit+ (ICC-SM) on the submucosal surface of the tunica muscularis after removing the submucosa from Kit+/copGFP proximal colon muscles (n = 6). Scale bars are 40 μm in both C and F.
