Table 1.

Number of differentially expressed (DE) genes (FDR < 0.05) in response to LPS on the autosomes and the X chromosome.

Category of genes Autosomal X-linked
Male-specific DE 632 23
Female-specific DE 585 31
Sex-specific 1217 54
DE in both sexes (FDR < 0.05) 8549 237
DE in both sexes (0.05 > FDR > 0.20) 1036 30
Neither DE (FDR > 0.20) 1673 72
Not specific 11,258 339
Sex-specific 1217 54
Not specific 11,258 339
Total 12,475 393

DE genes considered sex-specific were significant at FDR < 0.05 in the primary sex and not significant at FDR < 0.20 in the opposite sex. There was an enrichment of sex-specific responses to LPS among X-linked genes (54/393, 13.7%) compared to autosomal genes (1217/12,475, 9.8%) (Fisher’s Exact Test P = 0.01).
