  • Chronic alcohol excess

  • Hypercalcaemia

  • Hyperparathyroidism

  • Scorpion or snake bites (rare)

Ischaemia/reperfusion
  • Cardiopulmonary bypass

  • Shock states

  • Vasculitides

Infection
  • Viruses: Cytomegalovirus, mumps, coxsackie B, Epstein-Barr virus

  • Parasites: Ascaris, Clonorchis

Trauma
  • Blunt or penetrating trauma
