A, During consumption, appetitive signals coming from serotonergic neurons of the MRN reach CA1 hippocampal neurons, communicating reward ingestion and relative magnitude. CA1 hippocampal neurons in turn create a spatial memory trace by integrating sensory cues coming from the environment. B, A CA1-NAc pathway is then required for the expression of such reward memory.
