Protein levels of VEGF in retinas determined with Western blotting. VEGF expression was significantly higher in retinas obtained from STZ-induced diabetic rats than from nondiabetic controls. The increased VEGF expression was suppressed by treatment with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin (P < 0.05, n = 3 each).
