B, The cycle threshold is defined as the number of cycles required for the fluorescent signal of the polymerase chain reaction assay to cross the threshold (ie, exceeds background level). Cycle threshold levels are inversely proportional to the number of copies of the virus and thus serve to estimate viral load.
