The stress-strain response of the fibrous samples is markedly different in the x and z directions. Compression in the x-direction features a linear stress-strain regime, followed by a plateau. Compression in the z-direction features a steady non-linear increase in stress. The contrasting behaviour can be attributed to the orientations of the fibres and structural layering relative to the direction of compression
