Under reverse phase conditions, lipids are separated predominately based on its polarity. More polar compounds such as acylcarnitines elute into the mass spectrometer first with the more water insoluble compounds (cholesteryl esters, triacylglycerols) eluting last as the proportion of solvent B increases (up to 100%).
