HBGAs are synthesized by sequential addition of a monosaccharide to a precursor glycan, catalyzed by different enzymes. FUT2 catalyzes the synthesis of secretor antigens through the linkage-specific addition of a-fucose to the galactose and forms the H type1 antigens. H type1 antigens could be processed further by adding a N-Acetylgalatocosamine (GalNAc) or a galactose through a3 linkage to form A or B antigen which are catalyzed by enzyme A or enzyme B, respectively.
