Impact of eslB deletion on resistance to cell wall-targeting antimicrobials. (A) Plate spotting assay. Dilutions of overnight cultures of L. monocytogenes strains 10403S (wild type [wt]), 10403SΔeslA, 10403SΔeslA compl., 10403SΔeslB1, 10403SΔeslB1 compl., 10403SΔeslB2, 10403SΔeslB2 compl., 10403SΔeslC, and 10403SΔeslC compl. were spotted on BHI plates and BHI plates containing 100 µg/ml lysozyme, both supplemented with 1 mM IPTG. A representative result from three independent experiments is shown. (B to D) MICs for L. monocytogenes strains 10403S (wt), 10403SΔeslB1, and 10403SΔeslB1 compl. of lysozyme (B), penicillin G (C), and moenomycin (D). Strain 10403SΔeslB1 compl. was grown in the presence of 1 mM IPTG. The results of four independent experiments are shown. For statistical analysis, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Dunnett’s multiple-comparison test was used (**, P ≤ 0.01).
