Nucleosome density in interphase nuclei of pluripotent and somatic cells. Pluripotent cells possess smaller and relatively sparse clusters of nucleosomes (“clutches”) compared with somatic cells. In more differentiated cells, a dense arrangement of “clutches” results in more condensed chromatin, preventing the accessibility of transcriptional machinery, such as Pol II, and reducing transcription (Ricci et al. 2015).
