Ameloblasts differentiate from primordial cells, first into a secretory epithelium type, then to a differentiated epithelium type, and finally to a reduced enamel epithelium type (from left to right). We postulate that the vectorial transfer of citrate from blood-side to the enamal side occurs in differentiated ameloblasts. ANKH, humna ankylosis gene product.
