Clinical parameters of periodontal disease.

GI 0 Normal
1 Mild inflammation, slight color change and edema, no bleeding.
2 Moderate inflammation, redness, edema, bleeding on probing.
3 Severe inflammation, marked redness and edema, ulceration and spontaneous bleeding.
BOP Presence or absence of bleeding within 10 s following probing of the pocket.
PPD The distance between the gingival margin and the bottom of the probeable pocket.
CAL The distance between the cementoenamel junction and the bottom of the probeable pocket.

GI, gingival index; BOP, bleeding on probing; PPD, probing pocket depth; CAL, clinical attachment level.
