Basal cells are the principal stem cells of the airways, differentiating into most other epithelial cell types. Different cell subsets can be characterized by expression of particular genes, for example, pulmonary ionocytes can be classified as expressing FOXI1 and CFTR, the gene mutated in cystic fibrosis.
