The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s six guiding principles of trauma-informed care are not linear practices or procedures but instead are principles that should be applied in a setting-specific manner. They include the following: safety; trustworthiness and transparency; peer support; collaboration and mutuality; empowerment, voice, and choice; and cultural, historical, and gender issues.
