Palatoschisis and Cheiloschisis, Hard and Soft Palate, Puppy.

The lateral palatine processes have failed to fuse during the first trimester of gestation (palatoschisis). In dogs, palatoschisis has been attributed to genetic abnormalities, excessive intake of vitamin A during gestation, and the administration of cortisone during gestation. The upper lip is also cleft (cheiloschisis).
