Enhancement of plasminogen activation on the cell surface. Activation of cell-associated plasminogen (Plg) to plasmin (Pm) by cell-associated plasminogen activators (PA) is markedly enhanced compared to the reaction in solution. The Pm formed remains on the cell surface, where it is relatively protected from its inhibitor, α2-antiplasmin (α2-AP). This results in the association of the proteolytic activity of plasmin with the cell surface to function in fibrinolysis.
