During hypertrophic scar formation, mechanical force delivered from the extracellular matrix to Piezo1, which localizes at cell membranes of dermal fibroblasts. Then, mechanical force triggers Piezo1 overexpression and Piezo1-mediated calcium concentration in dermal fibroblasts. In addition, Piezo1 activity promotes proliferation, migration, and differentiation of dermal fibroblasts in response to mechanical force, subsequently contributing to mechanical force-induced hypertrophic scar formation.
