Figure 2. Mechanisms of innate memory in monocytes and macrophages. BCG administration causes epigenetic changes in the innate immune cells (macrophages, monocytes and NK cells), allowing them secrete cytokines–IL-1β and TNF-α in response to unrelated pathogens. This is known as trained immunity or innate immune memory.
