When Hpx− strains are aerated prior to H2O2 addition, ClpSA but not ClpX is important for continued growth. Cultures were grown in aerated medium from an OD600 of 0.005 to 0.1. They were then (time zero) diluted into fresh medium, and 8 μM H2O2 was added. The superior growth of the ΔclpX strain is consistently observed. Strains: LC106, ASE11, and ASE7.
