Hypothetical structures of tissue engineered cerebral cortices that vary by number of layers (laminae) and cellular orientation (polar or non-polar). The default neocortex (left, blue) could be re-configured into a non-laminar, non-polar structure (center, orange), or a hyper-laminated, polar structure (right, green) to test relevant hypotheses.
