The second messengers (p)ppGpp and cyclic di-GMP regulate gene expression during the tick phases of the cycle. RpoS transcribes genes required for transmission (nymphal blood meal) and infection of the vertebrate reservoir. RpoS is OFF in unfed ticks and feeding larvae.
