Anti-apoptotic and pro-autophagic effects of curcumin. Curcumin can upregulate the level of Nrf2 to induce the expression of HO-1, and it also plays an anti-apoptotic role by downregulating the levels of BAX, p62, and AMPK-mTOR, and phosphorylating Bcl-2 through AMPK and JNK1 pathways. In addition, curcumin can increase the ratio of LC3II/I and the level of Beclin-1. This way, curcumin can enhance autophagy and protect cells from further damage.
