General experimental scheme for the quantification of culturable, total, and viable C. coli cells on artificially inoculated lamb meat pieces using plate counting, qPCR (control) and PMA-qPCR, respectively. S1 buffer: 10 mM Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS; pH 7.0); 0.5 M Sucrose; 1.0 mg/ml Lysozyme; 50 mM EDTA. S2 buffer: 10 mM PBS (pH 7.0); 50 mM EDTA; 100 μM PMA. ddH2O: double-distilled water.
