Other Respiratory Diseases (ORD) in the Norwegian cohort consisted of lower respiratory infections, mostly confirmed as bacterial pneumonia by chest X-ray and routine blood cultures. As described in (12), the South African ORD group consisted of individuals with a range of other diagnoses including acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma, upper and lower respiratory tract infections including viral and bacterial infections. Attempts to identify these organisms by bacterial or viral cultures were not made.
