At 18 gestational weeks, the intermediate zone (I) is of lower T2 signal intensity and the subplate layer (S) is of higher T2 signal intensity. With increasing gestational age, there is an increase in the T2 signal intensity of the intermediate zone, but the subplate layer remains of higher T2 signal intensity with no appreciable signal intensity alteration on visual assessment.
