We describe four phases of each heart cycle. Note that the position at the beginning of each phase is shown. Phase 1: the ventricle rests after contraction and the atrium rests after expansion. The AV canal goes from fully occluded to 10% occlusion. Phase 2: The diastolic phase when the ventricle expands while the atrium contracts. Phase 3: the ventricle rests after expansion and the atrium rests after contraction. The AV canal becomes fully occluded state. Phase 4: The systolic phase, when the ventricle contracts and the atrium expands.
