Total cell number (%): DAPI signal correlating with total cell number of all wells used for the measurements shown in Figs. 1a–e and 2a,b.

Dead cells (%): the percentage of dead cells after treatment with the solvent EtOH (0.2%), PC10:0/10:0 or PC20:0/20:0 (10 µM) for 18 h was calculated after determination of the total cell number and the number of dead cells utilizing DAPI (1 µg/ml) and Ethidium homodimer-1 (10 µM), respectively.

The statistical significance was calculated by one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc testing using Tukey's test, no significant differences were observed.

SEM standard error of the mean, SD standard deviation.
