The model we propose for Zn2+ activation of kinase pathways involves primarily activation of kinases upstream of ERK, in particular both MEK and Ras, as well as a potentially smaller component of inhibition of phosphatases that sustain ERK signaling. Activation of the MAPK pathway at the Ras node would explain the similar activation patterns of both Akt and ERK.
