A scheme showing the rationale of mitochondrial biogenesis in pituitary oncocytomas. Oxidative respiration of mitochondria in oncocytoma cells is partially impaired because of mtDNA mutations and consequent complex I disassembly Overexpression of 14-3-3η inhibits glycolysis by inactivating LDH. The tumour cells survive by turning to mitochondrial biogenesis because of failed induction of glycolysis.
