Histological and immunohistochemical evaluations. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining of the condylar specimens showed a smooth surface with a thick cartilage layer in the MSC-CM group, although CR with thinning of the cartilage layer was seen in DMEM and control groups (dotted arrows). Immunohistochemically, chondrocytes around the CR lesion showed decreased expression when treated with anti-CD44 and anti-VEGF antibodies in DMEM and control groups, whereas the thickness of the cartilage layer and expression of VEGF in the zone of hypertrophic chondrocytes as well as CD44-positive cells in the zone of proliferating chondrocytes appeared to increase in the MSC-CM group (thick arrows).
