Temporal assessment of State III, IV, and VCI and VCII mitochondrial respiration rates in hippocampal mitochondria after severe TBI (A) or sham-surgery (B).

Animals (total n = 6 per group for CCI, n = 4 per group for sham surgery) were euthanatized at 1, 3, or 7 days following injury and the ipsilateral (Ipsi) and contralateral (Contra) hippocampi were rapidly removed for isolation of the mitochondria. Mitochondrial bioenergetics was assessed using the Seahorse Biosciences XFe24 Flux Analyzer. Data are expressed as the mean ± SD. The difference between the ipsilateral and the contralateral hippocampi was evaluated using one-way analysis of variance and Student’s t-test. *P < 0.05, **P < 0.01, ***P < 0.001.
