Diagram of the structure of the retina. The different cell types are located in different layers. The light reaches the nerve fiber layer. Ganglion cells transmit signals to bipolar and horizontal cells. Finally, they reach the rods and cones that transform it into electrical signals. The retinal pigment epithelium, formed by the epithelial pigment cells, served as physical, nutritional and signal support to the rest of the retina.
