3T3 fibroblasts on six independently produced arrays under standard 1-g gravity conditions in an upright orientation were analyzed. The total force per cell increases linearly with the number of deflected pillars (A). The ratio results in the traction force per deflected pillar (B). For cells grown on identically prepared arrays the values display a significant spread between some of the arrays. A Dunn test of multiple comparisons after a Kruskal–Wallis significance test was performed to characterize the variation (only the non-significant pairs are shown in (B); ns, p > 0.05). The traction force is independent from the cell-spreading area (C). Three of six data sets randomly chosen are shown in (A) and (C). Each datapoint represent one analyzed cell.
