Effects induced by ingestion, physical contact with coral tissue and microbial response to the presence of microplastic particles in the seawater. Reported are the consequent shifts in coral microbiome composition and stress in terms of changes in gene expression and DNA oxidative damage. The combination of all of these processes can ultimately cause coral mortality.
