Model depicts differential responses to permethrin treatment in motoneurons of susceptible and resistant mosquito populations. Susceptible mosquito motoneurons depolarize upon permethrin binding to VGSC, leading to cessation of neurotransmitter release, paralysis and possibly death (left panel). Vergel resistant mosquitoes, with reduced VGSC transcript and protein levels, have fewer permethrin binding sites on motoneurons, and therefore less depolarization and subsequent toxicity. Permethrin molecules are shown in bright yellow spheres. Aqua molecules depict VGSC. Red, aqua and blue circles depict neurotransmitters. Pink receptors depict neurotransmitter receptors.
