Hypothetical effect of a drug on network activity of sleep-inducing neurons in a mouse model of narcolepsy. The circles represent neurons that increase Ca2+ fluorescence during sleep. The size of the circles and the lines between the neurons identifies the strength of the fluorescence between pairs of neurons. In narcolepsy (vehicle) we speculate that perhaps the sleep network is hyperactive which leads to sleep fragmentation and narcoleptic behavior. The drug reduces network activity so that it is similar to that seen in normal wildtype animals.
