Histopathology of the inner ear. The rats in the intratympanic gentamicin injection (ITGM) only group show a near-complete loss of both the type I and II hair cells and a collapse of the sensory epithelium both in the saccule (A,D) and utricle (G,J). In contrast, the rats in the ITGM combined with intramuscular deferoxamine (DFO) injection (ITGM+DFO) and normal control (ITNS) groups showed a relatively well-preserved sensory epithelium including the hair cells, cilia, and otolith layer in both the saccule (B,C,E,F) and utricle (H,I,K,L).
