SH-SY5Y cells were cultured in serum-free culture medium (0% FBS) and treated with BDNF.

(~ 1 nmol) or GSB-106 (10 nmol to 100 µmol) for 72 h. After incubation cells were collected and stained with Metabolic Activity Dead Cell Apoptosis Kit with C12 Resazurin, Annexin V APC, and SYTOX Green according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The stages of apoptosis were determined by staining: early—Annexin V+/SYTO Green; late—Annexin V+/SYTO Green+; necrosis—Annexin V/SYTO Green+. The data is presented as the mean ± S.E.M. of percentage of total cell population (n = 3; *p < 0.05 compared with the “0% FBS” group; Wilcoxon t-test).
