Mechanisms of autoimmunity. The pathogenic mechanisms of autoimmunity involve a genetic susceptibility (i.e., HLA genotype, cytokine polymorphisms, etc.) and the occurrence of acquired, environmental factors (i.e., infectious agents, neoplastic clones, medical/cellular therapies).
