Unless otherwise reported mean [standard deviation] (range) is given; BCVA = best corrected visual acuity (logMAR = logarithm of minimum angle of resolution). EDSS = expanded disability status scale, HON = multiple sclerosis with a history of optic neuritis, N = number of subjects, NON = multiple sclerosis without a history of optic neuritis. Y = years. Disease duration was defined as timespan between symptom onset and visual measurements.
