Personal income by year of diplomate status achievement for all male (blue symbols and lines [n = 403]) and female (red symbols and lines [280]) respondents of Figure 1 (A) and for only those in private practice (B) and academia (C). Respondents were asked to report their income on a sliding scale to a maximum of $300,000. Within each panel, the bottom subpanel shows a scatterplot of incomes < $300,000 (each symbol represents one respondent earning income < $300,000) and the top subpanel shows the number of respondents (each symbol is a different respondent) with incomes ≥ $300,000. The smoothed curves reflect estimates of mean salary for both genders. Overall, annual income for males was 18% higher than for females (P < 0.001). This gender difference was greater in private practice (25%; P < 0.001) and less in academia (8%; P = 0.03).
