Model for reversible versus heritable protein aggregation in the context of evolutionary adaptation. When stresses are transient, reversible adaptation via protein aggregation is favoured. However, when stresses become more constant, such as during pathogenic transformation, proteins that formerly aggregated reversibly may acquire the capacity to do so heritably.
