The effect of citicoline treatment on the average number of inflammatory infiltrates in brain and spinal cord transections of rats with EAE. Female Lewis rats were immunized by intradermal injection of guinea pig spinal cord homogenate (50%) with complete Freund’s adjuvant and Mycobacterium phlei (11 mg/mL); treatments with citicoline (500 mg/kg ip, qd) or vehicle (n = 7 per group) started on day 6; brain and spinal cord fixed by transcardiac perfusion on day 14 after immunization. Inflammatory infiltrates were counted under optical microscope on brain and spinal cord cross-sections stained with hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl violet stain; these data are presented as means and standard deviations. Statistical significance of differences evaluated by Mann–Whitney U test. (presented at the 56th meeting of American Academy of Neurology, San Francisco [48]).
