During osteogenic differentiation, numbers of regulators are found to modulate histone acetylation and methylation by affecting the catalytic activity of histone modifiers. The altered histone acetylation and methylation then control expression of osteogenic marker genes, directly or indirectly. HATs histone acetyltransferases, HDACs histone deacetylases, HMTs histone methyltransferases, KDMs histone demethylases, BMPs bone morphogenetic proteins, HOXs homeobox genes, Runx2 runt-related transcription factor 2, OC osteocalcin, OSX osterix, ALP alkaline phosphatase.
