Methods Randomized controlled trial
Participants Patients having major surgery (> 90 minutes and realized under general anaesthesia) of the abdomen, pelvis, thorax, face/neck; vascular surgery in a patient older than 65 years; or major surgery (> 90 minutes and realized under general anaesthesia) of the abdomen, pelvis, thorax, face/neck, vascular surgery in a patient older than 50 years; risk factor for cardiac or respiratory disease; medical history of smoke; renal impairment; active smoking; blood losses > 500 mL, emergency surgery, 50 to 90 years of age
Interventions Dexamethasone (0.2 mg/kg at end of surgical procedure, second dose 0.2 mg/kg 24 hours after surgery) or placebo (at end of surgical procedure, second dose 24 hours after surgery)
